In general, Chile is a very safe country. The risk of getting robbed in touristy places is very low. However, tourists sometimes can be victims of pick-pockets and tricksters. Armed muggings hardly happen. You can protect yourself against thieves by not visibly carrying around valuables and by taking extra care in busy areas like pedestrian malls, metro and train stations. After dark you should avoid narrow alleyways and dark streets as well as parks in general. It is also recommendable to walk around in small groups after nightfall.
