Volunteer Work in Chile! Give back to society and help make the world a better place!

Give up your time for a good cause and show your commitment to help others by participating in a Volunteer Work in Chile!

Unfortunately, social disparities in Latin America are very prevalent, and as a result, many social institutions are often left without adequate funds to help all of those in need. You can help alleviate this problem by participating in one of our volunteer work projects in Chile where you can work alongside local institutions and foundations that provide direct assistance to those who need it most. With Chile Inside, you can choose among different projects to find the one that best suits your interests. As a volunteer, you will have an authentic cultural experience that stretches far beyond mere tourism.

Through our partnerships with different social institutions and non-profit organizations, Chile Inside offers various volunteer work projects throughout the country. In most cases, you will work directly with the needy and take on responsibilities, such as caring for abandoned children, helping handicapped children or elderly adults, and supporting the homeless population. There are also opportunities to work in animal rescue centers with street dogs and cats or to take part in projects focused on environmental sustainability.

The best way to get to know the language, people, and culture of a foreign country is to become a part of the society. Volunteering allows you to do just that. As a volunteer, you will explore and appreciate Chile from a perspective that is entirely different than that of a typical tourist.

Volunteering not only benefits others, but it is also a very rewarding experience for yourself. In addition to knowing that you made a positive impact, having international volunteer work experience on your resume will demonstrate your generosity, adaptability, optimism, and tolerance. You will also rapidly acquire Spanish skills while volunteering, which makes you even more interesting to future employers. Spanish is increasingly essential to learn because it is now one of the most spoken languages in the world due to Latin America’s growing economic relations with the industrial countries. Overall, gaining volunteer experience will make you stand out from the crowd and give you a significant advantage when applying for a job.

We offer a wide range of different volunteer projects throughout Chile. Our volunteer placements include prestigious domestic and international institutions, foundations, Chilean companies, private and public institutions, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and animal shelters.

Due to the nature of these programs, volunteer work is not paid.

Who can sign up for voluntary work in Chile? Does it require previous experience?
Anyone who is between 18 and 65 years old and wishes to take an active part in social projects can sign up for volunteer work in Chile. We place people from all around the world in many different projects. Previous experience is not required, as in general volunteers just need to have so-called “soft skills”. It is important that you are tolerant and open to other ways of living. Patience and an understanding of voluntary work abroad is also a plus, as you will come across people and situations that require empathy.

Is there a minimum stay requirement?
To take part in voluntary work (full-time) in Chile we require a minimum stay of four weeks. Exception from this requirement is the volunteer work in animal shelters, that we also organize from 2 weeks on. It is possible to do a part-time volunteer work together with a Spanish course in Chile. There is a minimum two-week stay for this kind of volunteer placement. The maximum amount of time that can be spent in full-time or part-time placements is six months.

How far in advance do I need to send in my application to Chile Inside?
We need between 2 and 8 weeks to organize a voluntary work that matches the criteria stated in the application documents. Please send us your application documents between 2 to 8 months before you wish to start. This leaves enough time to get you a placement that matches your preferences.

What happens after I send in the application?
After we have received your complete application and the registration fee of USD 120, we create an internal profile in Spanish, which is used to suggest you for voluntary positions that match your interests. The placement process takes between 2 and 8 weeks, depending on your preferences, previous knowledge, duration of stay, etc. During this time, we will of course be in constant contact with you. As soon as a volunteer work placement has been confirmed, we send you the offer with detailed information of your work place. If you decide to accept it, we start the booking process and send you the program agreement.

When do I have to pay the agency fee?
The agency fee is due once you accept the volunteer work place according to the offer we send you.

Why do I need to pay a placement fee?
Chile Inside is a private agency that offers services to foreigners in Chile. We don’t receive financial support from the government or from any other organization or institution. We put a lot of effort into arranging everything for our participants. The program costs help us cover all expenses related to organizing your stay abroad (for example, rental of office premises, ongoing administration fees, our multilingual staff, website maintenance, marketing costs, taxes, etc.). Chile Inside is also committed to supporting charitable causes! We regularly carry out clothes and money donations in order to support social and charitable institutions in Chile, and support animal protection.

What level of Spanish is required?
You should have a good command of Spanish. Communication is particularly important in volunteer projects as it ensures that you as well as the people with whom you work profit from your stay. You should be able to communicate with children as well as disabled or elderly people (depending on the type of project) after a short introductory period. If you feel you need to improve your language skills, we are happy to book a suitable Spanish course in Chile for you.

How many hours do I need to work per week?
To a certain extent, the working hours also depend on your personal commitment. We organize full-time assignments (between 30 and 40 hours per week) as well as part-time assignments, which are completed together with a Spanish classes in Chile. Most institutions or organizations are very grateful for the help of foreign volunteers and respect their wishes as long as the personnel structure and the company rules allow for this.

Do I have an obligation towards my host institution/organization?
We organize all volunteer work projects in Chile thoroughly and diligently. Likewise, the host institutions go to great lengths to welcome their voluntary helpers and to provide a work introduction. Therefore, it is important that you are aware of your responsibilities. The main objective of doing voluntary work is to help others (people or animals). Working hours as well as company rules and regulations need to be respected and work tasks should be completed properly. Also, the requested time of stay should be completed to avoid complications in the company’s personnel planning. Particularly in projects which involve children it can be very sad for the little ones if volunteers suddenly don’t turn up anymore.

What will be my tasks during my voluntary work in Chile?
The tasks vary and depend on your placement. If working with children, everything revolves around making sure that they are happy. Activities such as playing, doing handicrafts, dancing, doing music and sports as well as looking after the children/teenagers are part of the daily routine. If working in an old people’s home or a homeless shelter, activities involve care, assistance and entertainment of its inhabitants. In animal projects it is important that you are an animal lover and are not scared to pitch in and help. Many animals don’t lead a happy life and therefore just need a cuddle once in a while. They love attention and going for walks! You will receive a detailed description of your assignment as well as your tasks together with the offer.

What kind of insurance do I need for my stay abroad?
In order to participate in one of our programs, you need to at least take out travel health insurance. This is important as it will cover you against every possible case of illness. For this purpose, we cooperate with Caremed and can offer special rates to our participants. For more information read here.

Will I be picked up at the airport?
If you book the „VIP-Package“ for your voluntary work in Chile, we automatically organize pick-up at the airport and take care of the costs. The pick-up service will bring you directly to your accommodation in Santiago de Chile.

What should I do if I have a problem?
In the unlikely event that you experience problems during your stay in Chile, we are available to provide assistance. No matter whether you encounter these problems in your voluntary work or whether they are of a different nature, we are always here for you to help. You will find our 24-hour emergency number on your reservation confirmation. It ensures that we are reachable around the clock.

Will there be an English-speaking contact person in Chile?
Our office staff in Santiago is friendly and multilingual. Almost all of us speak at least three languages, including English, and are available to answer any questions you may have, or give you further information in your mother tongue.

Where will I be staying?
Participants stay in carefully selected local homestays. Unless requested otherwise, you will be allocated a single room (double rooms for couples and friends are available). Accommodation generally does not include board since experience has shown that most participants like to be flexible when it comes to eating times. However, half-board (breakfast + dinner) can be requested. All participants have access to a kitchen where they can store and prepare food. Some volunteer projects provide their own accommodation to their volunteers. If this is the case, the characteristics of your accommodation will be stated in your program offer.

Will I have access to internet where I’m staying?
Chile, and in particular its capital Santiago, is very modern and has a good infrastructure. Internet access (in most cases WIFI) is part of the standard equipment of 100% of the accommodation we offer in cities like Santiago, Viña del Mar and Valparaíso. Volunteer projects in rural areas where you stay at special volunteer accommodations (e.g. volunteer houses) may not have (a good working) internet access.

Do I need a visa for my volunteer work in Chile?
With the so-called tourist visa (tarjeta de turismo), which you receive upon arrival to Chile, you are allowed to carry out unpaid activities such as voluntary work in Chile. Further information concerning visa requirements can be obtained directly from us.
