Give back to society and show social commitment - Volunteer Work in Chile!

Show your social commitment and contribute your time to a volunteer project in Chile!

In Latin America the social disparities are very existent leaving many social institutions lacking the extra help of workers and financial support. Participate in one of our volunteer work projects in Chile and work with local institutions and foundations that benefit people in need. With Chile Inside you have the opportunity to choose among different projects to find the one that best suits your interests. You will get an authentic cultural experience that mere tourists daren't even dream about.

In cooperation with different social institutions and non-profit organizations, Chile Inside offers various volunteer work projects throughout Chile. In most cases you will work directly with the affected persons taking on responsibilities like caring for sick or abandoned children, helping handicapped children or elderly adults and supporting the homeless population. There are also possibilities to work in animal rescue centers with street dogs and cats or in environmental sustainability projects.

The best way to get to know a foreign country, its language, people and culture is to become part of the society and volunteering allows you to do just that. You will explore and appreciate Chile from a different prospective apart from the typical touristic perception.

Not only the people who receive your help, but you will also benefit from your social commitment. With international volunteer work experience on your resume, you will demonstrate your generosity, adaptability, optimism and tolerance; a significant advantage when applying for a job. In addition, you will rapidly acquire Spanish skills, making you stand out from other job seekers. Considering that Spanish is now one of the most important languages spoken in the world because of Latin America’s growing economic relations with the industrial countries, it is increasingly important to learn Spanish.

We offer a wide range of different volunteer positions throughout Chile. Our partners include prestigious domestic and international institutions, foundations, Chilean companies varying in size, private and public institutions, non-profit organizations as well as government agencies. Due to the nature of these programs, volunteer work is not paid. Depending on the location, small benefits may be rewarded to volunteers (accommodation, lunch, etc.), but are not guaranteed in any of the positions.

Spanish course + Volunteer work in Chile
In addition to full-time volunteer work positions, we also provide the opportunity to volunteer on a part-time basis. Full-time volunteer work requires between 30 and 45 hours from Monday to Friday dedicated to the program as opposed to part-time volunteer work which requires a time commitment of two to four afternoons per week.
Part-time volunteer work is carried out in combination with a Spanish course in the morning. This combination program is available in:

weissSantiago de Chile
weissValparaíso
weissViña del Mar

Independent of the volunteer schedule, we recommend all volunteers to participate in a Spanish course prior to or simultaneously during the volunteer work (part-time). This way you are able to combine the theory learned in class with practice in real life situations and get the most out of your stay abroad in Chile.

To complete your stay in Chile, leave it to us to arrange the perfect accommodations for you. We place our volunteers in the homes of carefully selected Chilean host families or in shared apartments. You will always have your own single room and access to the common areas of the house or apartment. All accommodations are cozy and located in nice and safe areas. In all cases, you will have access to public transportation, supermarkets, stores and other facilities of the city.

You can decide if you want to live with a Chilean host family or in a shared apartment. Living with a host family allows you to get to know the typical Chilean family life while in a shared apartment you will live with other young foreigners or Chileans. Half-board can only be offered while living with a host family.

Are you ready to show your dedication to social programs?

• If so, we will happily receive your application so that we can help you organize your volunteer work in Chile!
The application process is very simple. Please download the registration form and complete it accurately, following the instructions on the first page.

• Once you are finished, send us the form to or directly to your personal contact person at Chile Inside. Don’t forget to attach your resume with a recent photo so that we can elaborate your profile.

• To get started with the creation of your personal application profile adapted to Chilean standards and the organization of your volunteer work program, a registration fee of USD 100 will be due. Once we have these elements, we are ready to begin arranging your volunteer program. To organize a suitable volunteer program, we need between 3 and 8 weeks. In urgent cases it is possible to speed up the organization. Please contact us for further information if you have any doubts.

Who can sign up for voluntary work? Does it require previous experience?
Anyone who is between 18 and 65 years old and wishes to take an active part in social projects can sign up for volunteer work in Chile. We place people from all around the world in many different projects. Previous experience is not required, as in general volunteers just need to have so-called “soft skills”. It is important that you are tolerant and open to other ways of living. Patience and an understanding of voluntary work abroad is also a plus, as you will come across people and situations that require empathy.

Is there a minimum stay requirement?
To take part in voluntary work (full-time) in Chile we require a minimum stay of four weeks. It is possible to do a part-time volunteer work together with a Spanish course in Chile. There is a minimum two-week stay for this kind of placement. The maximum amount of time that can be spent in full-time or part-time placements is six months.

How far in advance do I need to send in my application to Chile Inside?
We need between three to 12 weeks to organize a voluntary work that matches the criteria stated in the application documents. Please send us your application documents between two to eight months before you wish to start. This leaves enough time to get you a placement that matches your ideas and preferences.

What happens after I send in the application?
After receipt of your complete application as well as the registration fee of USD 100, we create an internal profile in Spanish, which is used to suggest you for voluntary positions that match your interests. The placement process takes between three to 12 weeks, depending on your preferences, previous knowledge, duration of stay, etc. During this time, we will of course be in constant contact with you. As soon as a volunteer work placement has been confirmed, we send you the offer with detailed information of your work place. If you decide to accept it, we start the booking process and send you the program contract.

When do I have to pay the agency fee?
The agency fee is due once you bindingly accept the volunteer work place according to the offer we send you.

Why do I need to pay a commission?
Chile Inside is a private agency that offers services to foreigners in Chile. We don’t receive financial support from the government or from any other organization or institution. We put a lot of effort into arranging everything for our participants. The commission helps us cover all costs related to organizing your stay abroad (for example, rental of office premises, ongoing administration fees, our multilingual staff, website maintenance, marketing costs, taxes etc.) Chile Inside is also committed to supporting charitable causes! We regularly carry out clothes and money donations in order to support social and charitable institutions in Chile.

What level of Spanish is required?
You should have a good command of Spanish. Communication is particularly important in volunteer projects as it ensures that you as well as the people with whom you work profit from your stay. You should be able to communicate with children as well as disabled or elderly people (depending on the type of project) after a short introductory period. If you feel you need to improve your language skills, we are happy to book a suitable Spanish course in Chile for you.

How many hours do I need to work per week?
To a certain extent, the working hours also depend on your personal commitment. We organize full-time assignments (between 30 and 40 hours per week) as well as part-time assignments, which are completed together with a Spanish course in Chile. Most institutions or organizations are very grateful for the help of foreign volunteers and respect their wishes as long as the personnel structure and the company rules allow for this.

Do I have an obligation towards my host institution/organization?
We organize all volunteer work projects in Chile thoroughly and diligently. Likewise, the host institutions go to great lengths to welcome their voluntary helpers and to provide a work introduction. Therefore it is important that you are aware of your responsibilities. The main objective of doing voluntary work is to help others (people or animals). Working hours as well as company rules and regulations need to be respected and work tasks should be completed properly. Also, the requested time of stay should be completed to avoid possible complications in the company’s personnel planning. Particularly in projects which involve children it can be very sad for the little ones if volunteers suddenly don’t turn up anymore.

What will be my tasks during my voluntary work in Chile?
The tasks vary and depend on your placement. If working with children, everything revolves around making sure that they are happy. Activities such as playing, doing handicrafts, dancing, doing music and sports as well as looking after the children/teenagers are part of the daily routine. If working in an old people’s home or a homeless shelter, activities involve care, assistance and entertainment of its inhabitants. In animal projects it is important that you are an animal lover and are not scared to pitch in and help. Many animals don’t lead a happy life and therefore just need a cuddle once in a while. They love attention and going for walks! You will receive a detailed description of your assignment as well as your tasks together with the offer.

What kind of insurance do I need for my stay abroad?
In order to participate in one of our programs, you need to at least take out travel health insurance. This is important as it will cover you against every possible case of illness. For this purpose, we cooperate with STA Travel, with whom we have negotiated special rates. Chile Inside and STA Travel offer various advantages, the biggest of which is overall insurance coverage (illness, accident, third party liability, and baggage) for a reduced monthly fee. For more information read here.

Will I be picked up at the airport?
If you book the „VIP-Package“ for your voluntary work assignment in Chile, we automatically organize pick-up at the airport and take care of the costs. The pick-up service will bring you directly to your host family or the shared accommodation.

What should I do if I have a problem?
In the unlikely event that you experience problems during your stay in Chile, we are available to provide assistance. No matter whether you encounter these problems in your voluntary work assignment or whether they are of a different nature, we are always happy to help. You will find our 24-hour emergency number on your reservation confirmation. It ensures that we are reachable also outside office hours.

Will there be an English-speaking contact person in Chile?
Our office staff in Santiago is friendly and multilingual. Almost all of us speak at least three languages, amongst others English, and are available to answer any questions you may have, or give you further information in your mother tongue.

Where will I be staying?
Participants either choose to stay with a Chilean host family or in shared accommodation. Unless requested otherwise, you will be allocated a single room (instead of a double room or dormitory style rooms). Accommodation generally does not include board since experience has shown that most participants like to be flexible when it comes to eating times. Of course, all participants have access to a kitchen where they can store and prepare food. If staying in a host family, it is possible to book half-board. Double rooms for friends or couples who travel together are available upon request.

Will I have access to internet where I’m staying?
Chile, and in particular its capital Santiago, is very modern and has a good infrastructure. Internet access (in most cases WIFI) is part of the standard equipment of 95% of the accommodation we offer. In case you unexpectedly don’t have access to the internet, there are various internet cafes in Santiago (and other cities).

Do I need a special visa for my volunteer work in Chile?
With the so-called tourist visa (tarjeta de turismo), which you receive upon entering Chile, you are allowed to carry out unpaid activities such as voluntary work in Chile. Further information concerning visa requirements can be obtained directly from us.
