Get work experience in the Medical Sector in Chile

Are you interested in improving your Spanish skills and learning about the Chilean healthcare system?

If so, Chile Inside can offer you this perfect combination! Due to the high demand of programs in the medical field, we created this special program allowing participants to gain insight into the Chilean healthcare system while studying Spanish.

Our Medical Shadowing program is for medical students and other healthcare professionals who would like to become a part of a new medical environment and learn Spanish. In addition to observing the procedures and processes of medicine, participants are encouraged to compare the similarities and differences in the medical field between Chile and their home country.

The program follows the schedule: Mondays to Fridays you will participate in a private Spanish course for half of the day in Santiago then spend the other half of the day (only 2 to 4 afternoons per week) immersed in the everyday activities in a hospital or clinic.

The Chilean Health Care System

Healthcare in Chile is operated through two parallel systems- the public system and the private system.

Theoretically, healthcare is guaranteed to all Chileans, regardless of their ability to pay. Compared to other South American countries, the Chilean system is highly advanced and modern in terms of the amount of medical professionals and the clinical standards.

The national healthcare system provides basic coverage and medical services to all levels of society even though there is a difference between the services provided in the public and private systems. The public services fall behind the private in terms of sufficient specialists, hospital supplies, modern facilities, etc. On the other hand, the private clinics provide luxurious treatments in state of the art facilities using modern technologies. Of course these clinics that meet or exceed international standards of care come at a price only accessible by those who can afford the care, which is a relatively small percentage of the population.

How does the program work?

The Medical Shadowing program is designed for healthcare professionals and medical students who would like to gain a new perspective of medicine by working with Spanish-speaking populations and learning about healthcare systems outside of their home country. The program was created specifically for these individuals that have the desire to learn in a Latin American country but lack the time to dedicate to an extensive program.

The goal of the program is to allow students and professionals to observe the daily medical practices of a doctor in various disciplines within the medical field. Apart from this, students will learn medical vocabulary through their private course in Santiago, facilitating their communication in the work place.

The program also aims to create awareness of the healthcare situation in South America, which is represented on each end of the spectrum in Chile. It is encouraged that participants witness the advanced services provided in the private system as well as the public system which lacks in resources and services.

Work Areas

Participants may select a field of medicine that most interests them. Chile Inside will then match students with professionals practicing in that field to act as mentors for the duration of the program.

Participants will actively observe their mentor and other medical professionals interacting with patients in Spanish exposing the patient-physician relationships in Chile. Students are assigned to shadow in either a public hospital, a private clinic or in a medical consultation office.

The program is divided between the Spanish course and the Medical Shadowing. The Spanish course consists of ten or twenty lessons per week. You are required to take private lessons to ensure that your teacher can adapt the lesson to the requirements of the program (medical vocabulary). During two to four mornings per week, you will participate in the Medical Shadowing.
